Christmas Countdown - Day 8 - Advent calendar part 1

Today I will show you the first 12 pieces of an advent calendar. All pieces are QuicKutz die cuts. All pieces are 2" square. During December, they will find their place on a metal cookie sheet; staying because each piece has a magnet on the back... I hope you enjoy. The bell has alcohol inks dabbed onto the die cut to create a copper look.
Used some gell pens on the gingerbread people.
Die cut the sled (minus the Santa) twice and wedged in some backless buttons between the two pieces.
Used a "snow writer" pen to create the snow in the snowglobe.
Found this fabulous metallic handmade paper in Santa Fe. Made perfect bells!
Used Versamark and clear embossing powder to emboss the holly leaves. Added glass glitter to the holly berries. Rubbed antique gold rub and buff on the edge of the piece.

A piece of paper that I fringe cut with scissors changes the plain bird shape to a Cardinal!
A large glittered brad holds the snowflake pieces together.
The background is debossed and inked, and the reindeer is sporting a green star on his hat.
The nativity pieces fit perfectly on this size square. Don't forget to ink the edges of your pieces to create some depth.
The gingerbread house has been embellished with Stickles and Liquid Pearls.

Christmas Countdown - Day 7 - Clear Exploding box

An 'exploding' box is one that when opened, the sides of the box flap outward. This one started as a clear acrylic sheet from which the box shape was diecut from an Accucut die.
Crisscrossed ribbons, a prima flower, a fabric brad and a stamped tag adorn the top of the box.
With the lid off the box, one can see inside. Each piece is designed to hold journaling or a picture.
Because the outer box shape is clear, the next box shape needs to be decorated on both sides. One will be seen from the outside, one from the inside.
Having numerous die cuts available makes decorating the flaps relatively easy.
Most pieces come from the QuicKutz Jolly Christmas set released in 2008.

Christmas Countdown - Day 6 - Joy

Wooden letters are available at most craft stores in the wood department. I picked this one up strung with large bells and it had a few wooden embellishments on the front. I pried those off and then used a glue remover to get rid of what was left. I also removed the bells.

Trace the wooden shapes on the back side of your paper; the front side of the shape to the back side of the paper. For shapes such as the snowflake, label one of the shapes so that you'll have an easier time aligning the wooden shape with the paper later on.
Stain the wooden shapes, seal and then use Mod Podge to adhere the paper shapes to the front.. Sand all the edges for a good fit. Ink the edges with Chestnut Roan Color Box cat's eye ink. Embellish as desired. I used a ribbon with a charm, a couple of bells on the wire with a pine punch out, and the spellbinder's nesting bird die for the little bird. The paper is from the 6" Spiceberry collection by Memory Box... one of my favorite lines!

Christmas Countdown - Day 5 - Serger log cabin table cloth

For this project, please click here for detailed instructions in a .pdf file. Make sure you have adobe reader on your computer. You can make this in a weekend on a serger! And yes it's perfectly legal to use a serger when you quilt.
The serger created a beautiful rolled edge....
and the back is completely "clean" with no loose threads or any need of a backing fabric!
Log cabin quilts either have a yellow or red block in the center. Story is that the center block represents either the light in the window or the hearth of the home. I made sure each piece had a touch of red.
The log cabin block lends itself to perfectly to this technique!
One weekend and you have the perfect gift for yourself or someone you love!

Christmas Countdown - Day 4 - Picture-frame candle frame

Four picture frames. Purchase 4 glass pieces to fit (you'll have 8 total). 4 embroidered pieces on sheer fabric (or substitute vintage pieces as desired). 8 hinges. 1 candle.
Attach hinges to inside of frame as shown.
Sandwich desired embroidery or vintage fabric between 2 pieces of glass for each side. Use a wooden toothpick to hold the glass in place. You'll need this so that the glass doesn't fall out since you won't be using the back.

Christmas Countdown - Day 3 - Santa's Favorite Dog Pillow

How about a pillow proclaiming your favorite best friend? This was our Sam E. Dawg. Mr Dawg to you please. This pillow was inspired by one that I saw while shopping with our youngest son. At the same time we looked at each other and proclaimed that I could make this! So I went home and did.
A simple woven home dec fabric, some striped fabric for the piping and a fringe that matched! Luck was on our side. Note that the pillow corner is actually not a corner but more of a curve. Makes for a nicer pillow.
Print the picture you want to use on some Printed Treasures fabric. It's by far my favorite and stand up to lots of washings and daily use! Frame the picture with a ribbon.
With the embroidery software, take a Santa hat from one design and add it to the lettering you've already chosen. Send to the machine to embroider using gold thread.
