Ode to Pecans

Pecans.
7/30/2011 - I spotted a pecan.
frown.
When we moved into this house 3 years ago, I was excited when the first ones fell on the ground.
I picked them up every day.
I shared them with my dearest friends.
I loved pecan pie.
Pecan pralines and cream ice cream
I loved pecans.

And then.
They started falling by the bucketfuls...
on the walkways
in the yard
on the street

And then the happy squirrels came.
Food!
They invited their friends.
They dug up the flower pots
dug up the flower beds
buried pecans
dug them back up
cracked them
ate them
left the shells
had a party

Now, I hate pecans..
Last year I let anyone and everyone come get them. I will do the same again this year.
Bring your own bags.
I do not pick them for you.
I do not carry them for you.
I have 3 large trees and 2 smaller ones
The large ones will stay.
The 2 smaller ones will be history soon.
I will let you know when they start falling.
I do not eat pecan pie anymore..
I am not ungrateful for God's abundant bounty.
I'm just sick of pecans.....

and they haven't even begun to fall yet.

I'm linking to Seasonal Sundays at the Tablescaper's.. won't you join me over there?
Thank you so  much for your visit and your kind comments. I am so glad you came by!

  1. This is so funny, Marlis and I loved reading it. I can see pretty bags of pecans decorated and lined up on your front lawn for sale. How fun! I know someone with a avocado tree! He would bring them in (they are over $1 an avocado ) He said they lay all over his yard.

  2. I wish I was close enough to take some off your hands Marlis! I once stopped at the home of a stranger because I noticed she wasn't picking her beautiful pears-I treated her to a wonderful pear butter that year:@)

  3. Oh my, marlis! I would love to come to you and pick off a lot of your pecans. As funny that story with the cute squirrels sounds, I can imagine the mess they make. I love nuts very much. I plated a little walnut tree and with the first walnut the first European squirrel arrived in my garden. My tree is growing slowly but I will harvest a lot of nuts. They all have to be cracked before the fun of baking and eating can start. We would need a cracker maschine, wouldn't that be nice.
    Best greetings, Johanna

  4. I would so be fighting the squirrels for the pecans if I were closer to you Marlis. You cracked me up with this post, I guess we have to be careful what we wish for.

  5. I agree with Lynn! If I lived closer I would take some off your hands!!! Get some helpful family members and friends to shell, chop, and package them and maybe you could sell them at a small stand by your house!! :) xo

  8. In that situation, I would probably feel the same way that you do. Bless your heart! I'm up here in New Hampshire and good pecans are hard to find. If I were nearby, I would relieve you of some of them for sure! Have a great weekend!

  9. Oh Marlis, I can so relate to this. We don't have pecan trees, but boy do we have squirrels. I have big flower pots on my front porch, and every year they bury their little treasures down in the dirt. Then, just as you said, they return to dig them up and eat them. And they throw half the dirt out of my pots and leave a big mess every time!! I have tried so many things to outsmart them, but they are just too clever and persistent.

I do love pecans, but I don't envy you the mess. Such a funny story. Have a great weekend.

  10. If ever there was a post that deserved ROTFLOL it's this one! This is too funny! We had two apple trees in the yard that we just cut down because we could no longer stand dealing with all those apples every year! I can only imagine how much worse it is with the pecans!

  12. Marlis, You are so funny, and I understand. I have the same problems with figs, only I'm fighting the birds and yellow jackets. :(
Wanna trade pecans for figs? :)

  13. And to think, I always envied people with pecan trees! LOL If I lived closer, I'd sure love to pick a bushel full though to help you out.

We had neighbors with black walnut trees...delicious nuts but they leave nasty dark stains on anything they touch but the wood from them is gorgeous!

  14. Well, I love to eat pecans, but I don't want a pecan tree either. They are really messy trees. Most trees are messy though. LOL
Last year we battled acorns much like your account of the pecans.

  15. I understand what you are feeling but instead with walnuts from a walnut tree. We used to have one at our old house and my father loved walnuts so I would help him crack the walnuts. I was never a fan of walnuts but then I really was not a fan after all the hard work and you would only get the smallest piece.

  16. Marlis:

I don't know why, but I tried several different times on Sunday and Monday to comment on your post (which is hilarious) and to thank you for being a part of Seasonal Sundays BUT I couldn't comment. I'm not sure why, but I was happy that I could comment tonight on this and your tablescape.
