Gone Fishing Tablescape

All of us in this family are fly-fishermen. Our sons tie flies; if I am missing metallic thread, I simply check their fishing stuff. Our eldest ties the best ants ever! I've wanted to share this table with you for a while now.

I loved this sign so much that when I saw it, it flew into my shopping cart.
"Casting flies, telling lies" - anyone married to a fisherperson will attest that the ones that got away keep getting bigger and bigger as the years pass by.

Rattan/nito chargers, plates with a fish (Oh I know it's a bass, yes, yes, I do). Brown napkins in rattan/nito napkin rings. Brass flatware. and one fly sitting atop the napkin ring are all that i used to set each place setting. Now, I do recommend you use old flies, not new ones, and then be sure to nip the barbs off or your guests might be in need of a bandaid or too!

A fishing basket, some reels, an artisan fillet knife in it's sheath, and a twig or two are part of the centerpiece decor. Oh, let's not forget the large lantern.

I also added a few succulents. I really am trying with these things.. I either water too much or they wilt.. they are just not happy here! Look at these at Delores Arabian's gorgeous blog, Vignette Design. You will see how gorgeous they can be!

  7. Marlis, you manage to make a rustic setting look quite elegant. And your centerpiece is so creative. This should go into a fishing magazine as a feature for "catch of the day". xo,

  14. That sign is priceless! Sweet Mister is a huge fisherman...trips to Lake Baccarac (forgive the spelling?) in Mexico 3 or 4 times each year. One of the neatest mantle decorations I've ever seen was a pair of GIANT deep water stainless steel fishing reels on either end of the mantle. OMG...it was magnificent! Zrike...is that a German/Bavarian producer? They are beautiful. Thank you for sharing your marvelous design. Cherry Kay

  15. Oh Marlis, this is too fun! Funny too~ I had my hubby's grandfather's old fishing tackle box out this weekend and we were fish-out-of-water, dining this past weekend! I playing with my photos now, but your table is reel-y more sophisticated than mine, I needed a tetanus booster before handling those old lures!

I love your Bass plates and foundation of burlap! What a wonderful sign too, I would have fallen for it hook, line & sinker if I had spied it :-)

I love the amazing lamp. I so want it! The vignettes are simply Divine.

I sympathise with the succulent issue. It is one of the few plants that I can keep alive. Probably because I don't do anything, they are outside. I just leave well alone. Almost all other plants hate me......and I lurv them so much....boo hoo.

    Fondest regards Jo

  23. Such a beautiful table setting. LOVE the burlap table runner (I too have been inspired by Delores' use of burlap as well) and those plates are to die for. I have a son who ties flies also and dearly loves fly fishing. It truly is an art.

  24. What a great fisherman's table...my husband would love it if I did something like this for him! I remember, 50+ years ago, my Dad and brother sitting winter nights tying flies in anticipation of fishing season.
I really like the bass plates.
Thanks for sharing another wonderful table, Marlis.

  25. What a creative & original table, Marlis! Such great items you've gathered & those fish plates are TDF!

I have a question though. Why would you want to use OLD flies & not new ones??? Since I've never gone fishing in my life, I have no idea. Seems to me you'd want new ones on your table, not ones that had been in lake water or in a fish's mouth at one time, right? Not criticizing...I'm Just curious, honest. Educate me. Maybe new ones are expensive????

  26. I love your table! So unique. My mom would love to see it--she's creative, like you.

  29. Marlis, what a wonderful table! I'm not into fishing, but I do love freshly caught fish! Please tell me that there was some on the menu! I love how you hooked the lure onto the napkin ring. Lovely details.

  30. Rettabug - if you take the fisherman's good flies you get in trouble.. I'd buy brand new cheap ones.. then you don't feel bad about cutting off the barbs.. Not many fly shops around here, so I wasn't wanting to read my obituary - so I borrowed the flies.. You can wash them.. but you have to be careful..

  33. I love a theme. It must be the old teacher in me or something. This is so cute and full of whimsy. The setting is a great compliment to the great accent pieces that you used.

    Very FUN!

  34. This is so fantastic because it is so personal - a tribute to a wonderful sport - that brings families together! It reminds me of scenes from A River Runs Through It - such beauty to watch the fisherman cast his line - love this setting in candlelight! Perfectly done!

  39. Marlis, you do come up with the most creative tablescapes. I just love this one! I can see why you had to have that sign; it is perfect! Your dishes look great accented with the rattan chargers. I like how you have pulled the napkin through the ring and the finishing touch of the fly. The centerpiece grouping is wonderful as well. Truly a beautiful table!

  41. The rustic feel of this table is so inviting, so personal, and just very cool!! The lantern and basket look amazing there, and the china is beautiful. I love the idea of the little flies on the napkin rings, great idea. My daddy was a fly fisherman--well he was every kind of fisherman--and he took me out when I was a child. I never quite got the hang of it, but I certainly enjoyed being out on the water with him! Beautiful table, thanks for visiting with me and your kind comments! Have a great weekend!

  42. I just wanted to comment that this tablesetting gave me good ideas for honoring the men in our lives like you did. I think that theme is often difficult to achieve. I loved the Zrike fish plates, reels, blue sign, and how you used the flies. The design of the top of the lantern intrigued me as well. Years ago I did an artifical tabletop Christmas tree for my brother who is a fisherman and works for the state Fish & Game. I put flies and colorful sinkers and painted miniature wooden fish on it. This tablescape reminded me of that. I enjoyed the creativity of it.
