Happy Fourth Tablescape

We are setting heat records here.
Will we be outside this fourth?
Unless an arctic cold front moves through - NO!
I don't even think there will be a grill going.
Fireworks have been cancelled,
due to the lack of rain, high winds and extreme fire danger.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,

and to the republic for which it stands,

one nation under God,

 indivisible,

with liberty and justice for all.

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855–1931).
The original "Pledge of Allegiance" was published in the September 8 issue of the popular children's magazine The Youth's Companion as part of the National Public-School Celebration of Columbus Day, a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas.

The original pledge: I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

In 1923, the National Flag Conference called for the words "my Flag" to be changed to "the Flag of the United States", so that new immigrants would not confuse loyalties between their birth countries and the United States. The words "of America" were added a year later. The United States Congress officially recognized the Pledge as the official national pledge on June 22, 1942.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Louis A. Bowman (1872–1959) was the first to initiate the addition of "under God" to the Pledge. The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution gave him an Award of Merit as the originator of this idea.

The phrase "under God" was incorporated into the Pledge of Allegiance June 14, 1954, by a Joint Resolution of Congress amending §7 of the Flag Code enacted in 1942.

On November 12, 2010, in a unanimous decision, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston affirmed a ruling by a New Hampshire lower federal court which found that the pledge's reference to God doesn't violate students' rights. A United States Supreme Court appeal of this decision was denied on June 13, 2011.

  14. How great that banner looks in the tree!! What a wonderfully patriotic table, Marlis! You've done a wonderful job, even if you do have to move it all back inside due to the heat.

Love the hand towels hanging down like that...great effect. Beautiful flatware, too!! I'm jealous!

Would you believe it is going down into the 50's tonight??? Brrrrr! I knew we shouldn't have taken off that electric blanket. *sigh*

  15. Marlis, your July fourth holiday table is fabulous. I love the banner on the tree, its a great tree and deserves to be dressed-up for the holiday. Your centerpiece arrangement is beautiful with the flowers and flags, perfect container too. Your dishes are great and the red bowls add height to he table. Got to mention the checked cloth and the runners. Perfect!
    Enjoy your fourth.

  16. Marlis, so sorry to hear you are still suffering in the heat. I'm glad you were able to set this cheerful table for us and hang that fabulous banner in the tree! Thank you so much for the history of the Pledge--I did not know most of those facts and I always love learning. I feel so proud that the Supreme Court finally got something right. 19. Fogot to write that I set up my table just in time -- right after I did the shoot, huge winds came up that were scairy and knocked off my red lantern on my deck and a potted plant -- of course, the pot broke -- not super high temps here. Joni

P.S. Thank you for your note concerning my flatware. It was purchased in Berschweiler, W.Germany in 1973!

  25. I love this. Such a beautiful outdoor setting -- the flags are wonderful -- and lovely table. I never seem to be able to get it together in time for the Fourth as I have three parties, three Sundays in a row every June: my parents' anniversary, Father's Day, and my dad's birthday. I crash and burn once these are over and don't even want to think about celebrating.

  26. A great table honoring our country! I just love your banner! A very happy, festive table. Do you think you could come over and do mine or send me yours? My daughter arrives tomorrow and I am just thinking about a table! I am a little slow lately! lol
    Thanks for sharing.

  40. Great holiday post, Marlis...I like the rustic look the outdoors lends to the table. Sorry you won't be able to enjoy fireworks. In our part of the metropolitan area we are experiencing similar after-effects due to dry conditions. I hope you and your family are able to enjoy the holiday just the same. Take care, and I'll talk to you soon.
