Sunday night dinner. Just family. And sunflowers at the market. Braised pork tenderloins with sage on the stove. Recipe HERE. Gnocchi. English peas. A fresh garden salad. And sopapilla cheesecake for dessert. I'll post that easy-peasy recipe soon. You will love it!!
Tip: Many times a color will unite the whole table. However, don't forget to add a bit of relief to the eyes. I did that with the white dinner plates.
I really do not get on a ladder for these shots. Raise my arms and camera up high and capture the shot. My camera has a vari-angle viewer so I can see what I'm doing (most of the time - ha).
You can't really see the dessert plate between the salad bowl and the dinner plate, but it really added a bit of green to the dishes. Boy. Do. I. Need. Some. Green. Plates! Oh yeah, My name is Marlis and I am a dishaholic and I'm on the 12 step program. Ha.
Tip: Admitting a problem is one step to overcoming your addiction!
Can you believe these placemats are 36 years old? Really. Yes. Somehow, I've lost one or two. Now that is indeed strange. Yellow bowls from TJ's, my workhorse Wedgwood Windsor, and the most precious Granada dishes. History of these dishes HERE. The rosewood handled brass flatware was a gift from my mother when we were still newlyweds.
I have fallen in love with all the antique amber pieces I keep finding. Is this a throwback to the harvest gold of the 70's? Oh yeah I had a kitchen with some of those 70's colors.. can you guess the color that went with it? I love the bowl, it's a recent find. As are the covered dishes. The amber hurricanes came from Home Goods in Dallas last year. The wine goblets were from Stein Mart and the tumblers are antique Whitehall. Boy do I wish they were Fostoria, but hey, this way the grands can use these without me thinking twice about it.
Silly me, I didn't raise the blinds. I really do not like blinds. However, that window faces west. I live in West Texas. Do the math, blinds or the house is not much cooler than the triple digit outside temperatures!
I just love the fluted edges of these bowls. It's that texture thing. OOh yeah, it was Sunday. Mr. CJ was home. Which means - the tv was on.
See the undulating edge of the bowl.. plays nicely with the classic dinner plates. More texture from the tumblers and the placemats.
Mr. CJ shelled out cash for these napkins on a trip to Fort Worth's Pottery Barn last year. Yep, he feeds my obsession some of the time. Napkin rings from Stein Mart a long time ago. The napkin sets had different patterns in them. Loved that.
I just love Sunflowers. One of my favorite memories of my mom was of her having us stop at the side of the road leaving our cabin in New Mexico and cutting arm fulls of wild sunflowers to bring home. Naturally, I think of her with each sunflower.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful, the amber color is a great reflection of the heat of the sun at this time of the year. Of course the reflection is much better with the blinds closed against the western sun. I agre with Fabby, it has a feeling of Fall. Hugs, Dawna
ReplyDeleteMarlis, there is nothing wrong with loving dishes as long as you use them. You have set a beautiful table for your family to enjoy! I love sunflowers too :-)
ReplyDeleteMalis,
ReplyDeleteYOU really did do this just for ME! I LO V E Sunflowers! The tablescape is just stunning with all the textures and soft palette hues! I agree, if I were to purchase more glassware...it would be amber hued! My heart nearly stopped with the photo of the Sunflowers, dear friend!!! Too cute, your snapshot above your head. I've tried that, but when you're 5 feet NOTHING...let's just say it isn't pretty..the height or the photos! Ha!
Fondly,
Pat
You're counting down the days until autumn, and this looks like it could easily work as either a mid- to late-summer OR autumn table. It's beautiful! I can't believe the placemats date back so far!!! They have a VERY current look about them! The bowls are gorgeous. The ruffly edging makes them really stand out! Y'know, I think that Harvest Gold and Avocado Green are making somewhat of a comeback!!! The colors were always very autumn-like and pleasing to the eye. I think that built into or coupled with more current elements, it will come back strong! Actually, I'm not completely certain that it ever went away! :-) The napkins your husband bought are really pretty!!! He's totally hooked into your obsession which I see as a totally good thing! :-) Sunflowers, Sunday morning, and memories of Mom....a wonderful combination, Marlis!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful table. Love those placemats and sweet yellow bowls. I can't imagine being able to cut wild sunflowers on the side of the road. What a treat!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Maris: I love your tablescape with sunflower inspiration. I've got a couple in bloom right outside my kitchen. The yellow bowls and green plates under them are particularly striking. This is all so pretty!
ReplyDeletepretty setting...love the amber hurricanes and glasses!
ReplyDeleteHi Marlis! I think you are ready for fall, this is very a nice and warm tablescape. Your menu sounds delicious too. Love the sunflowers. I never see them in stores here....Christine
ReplyDeleteHi Marlis, I love your amber. Isn't it funny how things come back around. I had the harvest gold and avocado way back when. Those napkins are wonderful and so nice of Mr CJ to fund your obsession. I love the burlap runner, too. I'm looking forward to the cheesecake recipe. Now I have to check out the pork tenderloin........gotta run!
ReplyDeleteI think I have some amber dishes somewhere, I remember when those colors were popular. The sun flowers make the table pop. We have a family in town who start sunflowers and gives them to anyone who wants to see how big they get as there is a prize of money for the tallest one.
ReplyDeleteOhhh soo pretty and all my favorite colors. Not to mention I adore sunflowers. Thanks for stopping by today and your sweet comment.
ReplyDeleteLovely Marlis!
ReplyDeleteGreat colors! Your antique amber pieces look great. I remember we had an amber turtle candy dish I think it broke because the shell was hard to get a good grip on! 30 year old placemats! Wow... they look great!
What a great memory about the sunflowers! They sure do bring a bit of sunshine with them wherever they area!
Marlis, I really love the burlap runner. I have been wanting to make one. The runners in the shops are very pricey. Wish I could make those placemats. They don't make things that clever now. They are really a treasure.
ReplyDeleteWere you talking about the Avocado green/olive green that was the rage in the 70s and 80s? I have lots of green. I do believe the amber is coming with a bang. We are beginning to sell lots of it on the Etsy. I love your whitehall glasses.
You stirred lots of memories and it is so nice that the beautiful sunflowers bring such sweet memories for you.
Have a great weekend, Blessings, Ginger

ReplyDeleteLove this color combination. It just feels so welcoming, homey, cozy and makes me want to sit at your table. I love seeing your placemats. They still look great. Of course, you need green dishes! I am giving you permission. :) You can blame it all on me. What is it about dishes?? I really don't know but I can't seem to stop. I am stashing them in the most unlikely places, because I have run out of room in the likely places. I have PB gift certificates burning a hole in my wallet that I must spend soon but how do I decide?? I always love visiting your tables. They alway look like a place I would like to spend time.
ReplyDeleteMarlis,
ReplyDeleteThere are so many details about this table that I love. The colors, not all matchy-matchy, but perfectly coordinated. I love those napkins too and I love that your husband is also supportive of your obsession. I think the shadows on the table give it visual impact. I am coveting your rosewood flatware. I have been on the hunt for those forever. Your Granada plates are some of my favorite. Dianne
Would that have been Harvest Gold and Avocado? I think it would! The amber touches add the perfect warm glow. I had a set of amber goblets when we were first married. At some point I tired of them and gave them away...what. was. I. thinking?! I've looked at the Fostoria quilted goblets many times, and I think that the Whitehall are every bit as nice. This is such a marvelous table...deserves a redo for guests. Thanks for inviting us for a peak. Cherry Kay
ReplyDeleteHi Marlis! OH, I love your table and all of your sunshine. Your dishes are lovely and I had the same gold glasses for years and we used them every day. I lived in Odessa for quite a few years and my children were born there! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for popping in to see me.
be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
I love the way the shadows play with your Harvest Gold. Boy do I remember those colors. Harvest Gold and Avocado Green. Your table is so golden and brilliant. Love how your Sunflowers are the center stage star. Beautiful.

Hi Marlis! What a great memory to have of sunflowers! I remember stopping by the roadside and gathering flowers with friends. I love them on the table. I agree with you about the white mixed into your setting. Gives it a nice punch! I take my overhead shots the same way, but I can never see what I'm shooting! haha! Love all the green on your pretty table!
ReplyDeleteYou have given us a time to remember with the colors in your tablescape. The place mats ate so pretty and I love the pocket! The amber glasses are lovely and a great shade with your bowl. Just a beautiful table! You mentioned you were in Dallas last year! I live in the metroplex and love to shop at Home Goods! If you hadn't noticed they are opening two new Home Goods, one in Ft. Worth this Sunday and the one in Cedar Hill next Sunday!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Pam
Just lovely....I really love the shadows across your table. The colours certainly have a cooling effect.
ReplyDeleteSuzyq
Beautiful table Marlis. I love the sunshine and shadow in these photos, too.
ReplyDeleteLovely table and I adore sunflowers! Love how you pulled all the colors together! Love the sun and shadows too in some of your pictures!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty, love how the sun streams through!
ReplyDeleteI have never seen wild sunflowers, that must have looked amazing!
Love the colors, a hint of Fall.
