Rushing Fall tablescape

I know I shouldn't push fall to come this soon. However, with the massive heat wave we have had, maybe bringing in the browns will make it feel cooler! We did have two days this past Labor Day weekend where the AC didn't even think of kicking on! In the 60's on Sunday and 73 on Monday. We sat outside, we cooked out, we had doors and windows open, we reveled in the cooler temps!

So in honor of the cooler weather... browns and whites in a symphony of textures graced the table.

Our everyday Gorham flatware , so that everything is dishwasher friendly.. we are enjoying the cooler temps remember?

Simple white dinner plates on the nito/rattan chargers

Topped with a soup bowl in a lovely hue of golden brown

Topped with a simple monogrammed napkin

I found these open weave Irish linen napkins a few weeks ago at an estate sale.. They had never been used! So I promptly sat down, washed them and then gave them each a monogram.

The burlap runner, large and medium cloche, mercury glass candelsticks, and cross all grace our dining table.. so no set up was necessary except the dishes and a few votives in lower glass containers. The glasses used are some of favorites, each purchased in Santa Fe.

The matching carafe to the wine goblets.

Spanish moss tufts fall from the candlestick to add to the earthly charm of the table.

A favorite white pitcher stand on guard at this end to refill guests drinks as needed.

Pinecones, antique candles that were used as car headlights, a cross and some dried greenery sit atop the silver tray under the largest cloche.

The smaller cloche sports a lovely etched thistle design.

  6. I was joyfully absorbing each element, and then I came to the napkin, and I said, "O-o-h-h-h-h!", out loud. Magnificent find, and your monogram raised it to an art form. I love this table. Minus the pine cones, I think it could be a great year round, beautiful tablescape. Today you gave me some ideas for combining some of my things...so much to do...so little time. ;-). Cherry Kay

  10. Hi Marlis~ What beautiful monogrammed napkins on your fall table! Your sunlight filtered thru your drapes spilling on your table highlights all your elements so beautifully.

I envy your cooler temperatures~ we are in the 80's this week so a little reprieve for us weather-wise. I'm always anxious this time of year for fall but it seems to take its own sweet time to arrive. Glad to hear everyone is on the mend :-)

  15. First, Marlis, I am relieved to know the temperatures there have mellowed out! Now if they can just get the wildfires under control... We were watching the fires on the news this morning and praying for the families who have lost their homes and those who have lost their lives. It's just devastating! I love your transitional table. It has just enough fall and just enough summer in it. It's beautiful! You KNOW I am jealous about those napkins!!! I love the lettering you added to the already gorgeous pieces! You did a fabulous job...as always! I really like that etched (thistle) cloche, too. Gorgeous!!! Oh, if you didn't get the news already, it's all clear w/Jimmo. Whew! That was a scary one! Take care!!!

  18. Marlis, I really like the brown and white...I have been buying lots of brown clothes this year, not sure it is a good color for me, though. The napkins came out beautifully.

  30. The table is lovely but I'm still stuck at the part about you sitting down and giving your napkins a monogram! How awesome is that! I sometimes toy with the idea of getting a machine just so I can do embroidery . . . You're adding fuel to the fire, Marlis! I really like how your whole table came together.

  34. I'm trying my best to resist the urge to the same. I'm with you completely about summer being so oppressive this year that autumn is a welcome sight.

Your browns and whites are really lovely and perfect. It's sort of a subtle fall look, I think. My favorite part is the centerpiece. I think the antique head lights are cool little treasure.

  41. How unusual and clever to think of brown as cooling things off--and it did! You created a very soothing and cool setting with a color that is normally used with warms. I love it! And I too, am drooling over the etched cloche! Maybe a future post on the sewing/embroidery machine you have, for all of us who are loving your napkins? Great table, Marlis!
